Entertainment Spotlight: The Mindy Project

I decided that if this is a fashion blog, it's not only important to post about new and emerging trends, but also seeing how those trends are seen through media like film and television. Since the ever fashionable teen show Gossip Girl has gone off air, I've been more apt at finding shows where fashion takes a central role in understanding the characters and setting.

An unexpected contender: The Mindy Project. Going on it's second season this year on Fox, character Dr. Mindy Lahari (played by The Office star, writer, producer, and all-around girl genius Mindy Kaling) is constantly decked out in quirky clothes that show off her young, vibrant personality. Her outfits are always in good taste, showing that she's serious at her job as an OB/GYN, but still manages to find time to gossip about her celeb crush on her breaks. Kaling, who takes many roles behind the scenes of her show, has influence on her character's wardrobe. In an interview with Huffington Post and The Mindy Project costume designer Salvador Perez, Jr., it's revealed that Perez and Kaling work together on creating the great ensembles that are featured on the show, through  emailed ideas and sharing prospective materials. Whether it be a cardigan/printed blouse combo, or a simple, well-tailored dress with striking colors, the collaboration is definitely working.

The show has been looked upon so much for its fashion that websites have even worked to find out where exactly the outfit pieces come from Worn On TV has an entire section devoted to the show and finding pieces that are exact or near matches to what's worn on the show.

Personally, I like the fact that most all of these  outfits are seemingly daring and go against the usual fashion rules, but most always work. Mixed prints, clashing colors, and even 80s waist belts can all be seen in one outfit, which would typically make it look like an outfit is just doing too much. But when watching the show, it seems that Kaling is able to pull these looks off for her character. It reminds me that taking risks in fashion that go against the grain can payoff.

You can catch the great outfits on The Mindy Project on Fox Tuesday nights at 9:30 EST and catch up to the season on Hulu.

ABW Challenge: Day 15

Day 15

Today, I had a presention in my Public Relations class. Even though the class wasn't until 6pm, it gave me an excuse to dress even better than usual.

This outfit came out great! Both the skirt and the top are from Forever 21 (bought on two seperate occasions), and I think they are both pieces that can work with a number of different pieces in my closet. The knife pleated skirt can be paired with a tee shirt, blouse, or sweater in any color because of the black coloring. When it's cooler, I opt not to wear tights with it. Seeing as its about 20 degrees outside, I went with the opaque tights.

Similarly, the shirt works out great because of the black and white print. I can definitely see pairing some burgundy bottoms or even my moto vest I got to make a little color pop. Plus I love the open bow back (When I bought it, I didn't even though it was there; great surprise!).

The necklace was something I got from Rainbow awhile ago that wasn't more than two bucks, but I still get compliments on it. I love the seashell and medallion look to it that goes great with the black and white outfit.

The hair, on the other hand... Didn't love. Tried the flat iron technique I found on polyvore, and although it did come out curly, the curls didn't stay and ended up just making my hair poofy. An easy fix for this was to put my hair in a casual low bun and stick in a pretty flower clip to dress up the outfit as well as put more concentration on the accessory as opposed to the no fuss bun.

ABW Challenge: Day 2

Just as the day before, this was not the outfit I was expecting to wear today, mostly because I didn't really plan out accordingly yesterday. In any event, it came together well.
Day #2

My leopard skirt is something I love to pair with an all black ensemble, just to give it some life and keep it interesting. I remember seeing it on clearance at Victoria's Secret in the Pink section and thinking, "How has no one bought this yet!?" It was marked down from $35 to $12, and I could not resist the opportunity to grab it. Circle hem skirts are an established part of my wardrobe ever since I visited France and came home with some from the stores over there. Although they reached a high point a few summers ago, I can't bring myself not to wear them, even in the cold. Paired with solid tights and a fitted sweater, it transitions well for the winter.

I also love the collar necklace I found from H&M last fall. I had been wanting some since I saw so many in sets on Polyvore, but many were a bit pricey. I like this one because it is not an established collar and can act as a necklace instead. In fact, my supervisor at work loves it, but thinks its in the shape of a bow as opposed to a peter pan collar).

I'm sure these studded oxfords will be appearing several more times on here. If I'm not wearing my combat boots, I most likely have these on my feet. They were a great find over at TJ Maxx.
