Trend Spotter: Utility Jackets

Since I've been in France, I've noticed a lot of girls wearing these light fall jackets. They usually are a bit long, and usually in khaki or olive tones. I had no idea what to call the jacket, but I knew I wanted one. By the looks of them, they're lightweight and a little lose, making them the perfect jacket here in the every changing weather climate of Rennes, France (one morning, it's about 45 degrees F and pouring; by the afternoon, it's sunny and close to the 70s).

Preparing to put something on The Hunt (if you haven't hear of this website and love fashion, where have you been?!), but I decided to check on F21 first. Now, I may have not been on the site in a while. but I certainly do not remember them having a section under "coats" specifically for utility jackets. That's a sure sign that what I've been seeing over here is a growing trend.

Utility jackets from F21, ASOS, and Missguided

I went through a bunch over on Polyvore, and most seem about the same; lightweight, loose, a little boyish in fit, but very functional. According to research (thanks, Google), the trend has at least been around since the late spring. Obviously, I must have been working to many hours in my uniform to notice.

List:
  • Leopard Utility Jacket in Olive/Black from Forever 21
  • Four Pocket Utility Jacket in Denim from ASOS
  • Klara Aztec Utility Jacket in Khaki from Missguided

Work Fashion for Spring

I purchased this mint top and tangerine blazer from Marshall's a few weeks ago in order to prepare for interviews. I am currently working on getting an internship this summer in the public relations or marketing field.

Public relations in a non-profit sector seems to be vastly different than in the business ones, at least fashion wise. Because three of my interviews were for non-profit organizations, one of which was a film festival for sustainable themed entertainment, I went with the more vibrant and colorful look rather than the traditional conservative business attire. My assumptions seemed pretty on point since most of the people I meant in the organizations were chilling in jeans and a button up.

Trending: Stacked Bracelets

I am in love with the stacked bracelet trends that are showing up, especially when they are in pretty pastel shades. It's a perfect finishing touch to most every outfit for spring. I especially like the different textures and materials paired together to compliment one another.

I found a lot of handmade ones that I love over on Etsy. Samantha Morta of SLDesignsHBJ has some great bracelets for reasonable prices.

If you're willing to spend a bit more on stacked bracelets, check out this awesome one from Sandra Warner's GotChakra shop. It's coral colored beads look great with the gold charms and rhinestone accents.

Trending: Chevron

If there's one thing I have seen all over Pinterest and Polyvore lately, it's chevron. Chevron tops, chevron nails, chevron rugs; it's hard for me to scroll and not see them somewhere!

The pattern hit the runway a year ago in many Spring 2012, but has been around for decades. Italian fashion house Missoni is one of the most famous users of the zigzag design, incorporating it into tops, bottoms, and dresses alike.

Chevrons can be very flattering on people when worn correctly. Larger, thicker chevron lines are able to balance out a larger frame while thinner lines can create curves for those lacking in them.

Not sure about the trend? Try it out on nails! I found this great tutorial on Pinterest (Originally from Lines Across) that uses three different nail colors and tape to achieve the look.

The 90s are the New 80s

Just as previously predicted, the 90s are finally the new 80s. Cool vintage pieces have just scored another decade. What I especially like from the era is the resurgence of grunge and rocker chic.

I've experimented with both on Polyvore, and have seen how to balance out edgy with pretty. Just because it's grunge doesn't mean it has to be about all holey jeans. Kristen Stewart's style in the May 2012 issue of Jalouse magazine shows how to still look girly and wearing the trend. Although the sets are mainly black and white, both Demi Lovato and Kristen are shown wearing pops of color, like teal, deep violet, and peach. Heavy black liner, disarrayed hair, and neutral lips are the constants to the look. Stripes, polka dots, and icon tees are sure to become more popular as the summer comes.

A New Silhouette: The Oversized Shirt

A New Silhouette: The Oversized Shirt

The Vogue website had a great segment about oversized shirts from the runway being hot for the summer. It's interesting how only a few years ago, tops were made to have a woman's body shone off. Nowadays, it's more alluring to wear long and loose blouses. Although I did not initially like the "boyfriend" fitted jeans and blazers that became popular just a few seasons ago, I can see where this influence has created surprisingly polished ensembles from top designers, like Givenchy, featured in the set.

I Dream of Denim

A Dream of Denim
I remember going through my mother's closet when I was a little and seeing all of the denim jackets and dresses hanging up at the front. While visiting just last weekend, I saw a denim dress hanging in the back. Just a few months ago, I would have taken one look at the dress and thought it was outdated, but not old enough to be retro. But now, denim jackets and chambray tops are in for the spring. I wonder what other '90s looks will be coming made cool again. I really hope the high waisted, tapered jeans look doesn't come back. That will mean mom jeans are hip. Seemingly impossible, I know. But crazier things have happened.
